farm and the local economy in rural areas.
The principle of sustainability summons our church to support U.S. farmers who are turning to sustainable methods, and to encourage industries to produce sustainably. It summons each of us, in every aspect of our lives, to behave in ways that are consistent with the long-term sustainability of our planet.
Immediate: Find your local farmer’s market. Buy fruits, vegetables and breads from local producers to support your Text Box: You, O God, cause the grass to grow for the cattle, And the plant for people to use, to bring forth food from the earth, and wine to gladden the human heart, oil to make the face shine And bread to strengthen the human heart.
[Psalm 104:14-15]
Food in the U.S. travels an average of 1,300 miles from farm to supermarket. Almost every state in the U.S. buys 85% of its food from some place else. Like wise, the current trend towards large corporate farms that produce ‘mono-crops’ is destroying not only the Text Box: local economy and remove the energy wasted in transporting of food products long distances. To find a market near you, look on the web at Farmer’s Market Online: www.farmersmarketonline.com. Or to find a local food cooperative, in any of the 50 states use the US Food Co-op directory www.purefood.org/coopindex.htm
Long term: Join a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), by buying a share in a local farm and get a weekly supply of vegetables and support the long term sustainability of a local farmer. Information can be found at:http://www Text Box: Fruitful Harvest

Text Box: Almighty and gracious Father, we give you thanks for the fruits of the earth in their season and for the labors of those who harvest them. Make us, we beseech thee, faithful stewards of thy great bounty, for the provision of our necessities and the relief of all who are in need, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
